60’s Fashion and the Woollen Industry

Despite the decline of the Woollen Industry after the Second World War, there was a short revival during the 1960’s, due to demand from the Fashion Industry and the influence of Mary Quant. Come and see our collection of welsh designed clothes from the 60’s, and watch a film of them paraded in a fashion show. Discover the designs, styles and influences of Mary Quant and compare today’s fashion with the fashion of the 60’s. Explore 60’s patterns by looking at geometric and symmetric patterns and design your own pattern or garment.

From Fleece to Fabric

National Wool Museum

Follow the traditional process of creating textiles from the fleece to the finished cloth. Discover the skills involved in the large scale manufacture compared to the hand processes. Experience demonstrations of working machinery and a range of hands-on activities with your very own craftsperson.

The museum Trail

National Wool Museum

A tour of the Museum will enhance pupils learning as they see the development from the Domestic Industry to the Industrial Machinery and stories of the people who lived and worked in the local community.

The Village trail

National Wool Museum

A village trail brings the effect of the Industrial Revolution to life as you discover the sites of old factories, compare the houses of the Mill owners to those of the workers, and see the growth of the village, through its churches, chapels, shops and community hall.

The Woollen Industry and the Victorian Era

The Industrial Revolution dramatically altered the face and pace of woollen production in Wales. Explore the factors behind the rise of the Woollen Industry in Drefach Felindre. The session includes a slide show of images, group discussion and curriculum based activities.

Wonderful Wool

Explore the properties and products of wool in a facilitated session in the Museum’s Textile Gallery. Discuss why wool is the right material for the job as you dress up, examine patterns and handle collections, from traditional Welsh costume and carthenni to current fashion trends.

Textile Trail

National Wool Museum

Professional artist Julia Griffiths Jones has created five pieces of work that are displayed around the Museum. An activity has been created to engage children with each piece. Julia’s work offers a contemporary and personal response to the collection and the trail allows pupils to respond creatively to the museum.

The First World War Education Project

National Wool Museum

The National Library of Wales and National Museum Wales are leading a project to produce education resources for schools to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. As part of this project we are using items from the collections of both institutions to create digital teaching resources for Hwb.
