What you can expect:

Welcome to Big Pit 1.50pm

We will meet at the main entrance of Big Pit and make our way to the O&R building for refreshments.

Meet Your Miner 2pm

Tea, coffee & biscuits and the chance to get to know your underground tour guide.

Pit Top Preparations 2.30pm

Over to the area where the underground tour begins. Here you'll be ‘kitted up’ with the safety equipment needed to go underground. Helmet, cap lamp (light), belt with self-rescuer (gas mask). This equipment weighs about 2 kilos (4.5 lb).

Underground Tour

Your guide will take you 90 metres (300 feet) underground to explore the places where miners cut the coal which powered the industrial revolution. Your guide will tell stories of his working life underground. The tour usually lasts about 45 minutes, but this can be adjusted depending on the needs of the group.

Final reflections 3.30pm

Back to the original meeting room to reclaim your belongings and have a chat about our underground experience before leaving.
