Bronze Age Gold from Wales
Stephen Lushington
This plaster relief shows an acute attention to detail. Thomas Woolner was the only sculptor member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, formed in 1848. He was particularly conscious of the Pre-Raphaelite notion of being true to nature, depicting every detail as it appeared. At first unsuccessful, he emigrated to Australia, but returned in 1854, and made his name as a portraitist.
