Tureen with cover

Southwick Pottery (Factory)

Tureen, earthenware, oblong form with waisted foot and bulbous sides, to either end of the body twin solid scrolled loop handles with foliate moulding around the base, oblong domed cover with a semi-circular indent to the rim at one end, to the centre of the cover a scrolled handle with foliate moulding around the base; transfer-printed in underglaze blue with the 'Willow' pattern, to the exterior sides and the interior of the tureen and the top of the cover a Chinese landscape with pagodas, fences, willow trees, three figures crossing a bridge and two swallows flying above, around the interior rim of the tureen and the rim of the cover an elaborate border of scrollwork and wheel motifs against a diaper pattern ground, a lattice pattern border around the foot-rim, the handles covered with a speckled blue ground.
