Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Quai d'Auteil

Winifred Nicholson studied in London and became the first wife of Ben Nicholson in 1920. Like him, she was a leading member of the Seven and Five Society. Fascinated by effects of light and colour, she excelled at landscape and still life painting. This work of 1932-33 dates from her stay in Paris between 1932 and 1938. Nicholson lived in a second-floor flat at 48 Quai d'Auteuil, from which there was a view across the Seine towards a Citröen factory on the opposite bank.
