Bronze Age Gold from Wales
Badge
Pin badge given to donor, a gay man, for donating platelets via Welsh Blood Service. The donor had his first appointment for a platelets donation on 9 July 2021 following the change in rules that now allow gay and bisexual men to donate blood (and thus platelets) that came into force on 14 June 2021. This badge is given to everyone who donates blood after their tenth visit. Platelets count as three, so this was given to the donor on the fourth donation he made on 8 July 2022.
Platelet donation is the process of extracting platelets from the blood of donors through a procedure called 'apheresis'. Platelets have a key role in stopping or preventing bleeding. Most platelet donations are given to patients who are unable to make enough platelets in their bone marrow.
