Bronze Age Gold from Wales

A vase of flowers

These seemingly decorative paintings carried rich allegorical meaning for 17th century audiences. The brief blossoming of cut flowers alludes to life itself. As the wilting bloos suggest, life is short. Flowers originating from all over the world also hint at another history. Such lavish displays were only possible because of the growing reach of Dutch colonial power.
