Penydarren ironworks, photograph

Penydarren Iron Works, Effects of "The Strike". Penydarren Iron Works from the north east in August 1876 after the iron and coal strikes of 1873-75. The blast furnaces on the left had been disused for over a decade but the iron forges and rolling mills in the distance had been restarted in 1869 and the blowing engines on the right had been refurbished in the early 1870s in the hope of relighting the furnaces. However the blast furnaces were never relit and the works closed in 1875.

Photographic print within a card window mount. Printed paper labels at bottom left and right of mount.
