Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Head of a Man

DAUMIER, Honoré (1808-1879)

This distinctive character, looking back over his right shoulder, features in two other paintings by Daumier. He appears in scenes from the barricades of the 1849 revolution. The Davies sisters also purchased a preparatory drawing. The technique in this painting is more detailed than the other works, in line and layers of colour, and was probably painted later.

Work was part of the AFA tour (2009-2010): From Turner to Cézanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales
