Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Ship of Fools VII

Flynn, Michael (Maker)

A figure group of porcelain, covered in a thick satin glaze decorated in patches with painted oxides (red, blue, yellow, green and brown); the whole is roughly modelled, with various tears and cracks; the base, in the form of waves, supports a simple boat form containing ten figures: a figure in the bow, wearing a conical hat, points forward; a second in the stern, wearing a four-peaked jester's hat, points backwards; a third, standing near the stern, looks upward with both arms raised; three figures look out to starboard, one shielding his eyes with his right hand, another wearing a brimmed hat, a third wearing a two-peaked jester's hat and holding a bunch of flowers; the four figures on the port side comprise a man and a woman embracing and kissing each other, a man climbing over the side and a man peering intently down into the waves.
