Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Penrhyn Quarry, photograph

unknown (Photographer)

Steam engine and rolling stock by the ‘powder mill’, Red Lion level, Penrhyn Quarry. The photograph shows the 'powder mill' (originally established in the 1920s) – Penrhyn Quarry's attempt to profit from the thousands of tonnes of slate waste. This is an example of the various uses of slate i.e. not only for roofing. The two workers in the photograph have not been identified. The view shown in the photograph has now been completely transformed as a result of the development of the quarry, and also following a fire at the powder mill.
