Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Coal tram

Sheet wrought iron plateway dram with original load of coal from Blaenant opencast coal site.

During opencast coalmining operations in April 1973 at Blaenant, between Blaenavon and Brynmawr, Mon., a tram, fully loaded with coal, was found still standing on its rail track in the mine roadway. The tram's flangeless cast iron wheels and the cast iron rails, and the fact that the area is known for its early coal mines suggests that the tram is more than 100 years old. It is believed that the tram and its load were buried under a roof fall and have remained in the same position since that happened.
