Lithophane

Porcelain plaque or 'lithophane' the porcelain body of a pale greyish hue when unlit, producing a range of creamy greys when lit; of rectangular form, very thinly cut, the design depicted in intaglio, when back lit producing the image, in light and shade, of a half-length portrait of a man, wearing an open fronted shirt, an unbuttoned waistcoat, a top coat and a tri-corn hat, holding a gnarled wooden staff in one hand, the other arm raised with one finger pointing upward.
