Thomas Smith & Sons Ltd. 5-ton steam crane

Five ton, four wheel, steam loco crane built by Thomas Smith & Sons (Rodley) Ltd., Leeds, 1925, builder’s no. 10,373. Obtained 1969 from Thomas H. Howell Ltd., Newport Works. Restored 1999 by Vale of Glamorgan Railway Society.

The crane was steam-driven and worked in the steel stock-holding yard of Thomas Howell of Newport. From the time the new crane was purchased in 1925 until its retirement in 1969 it had been operated by the same driver.
