Model of Neath Abbey ironworks 0-4-0 locomotive SPEEDWELL, with tender (1997.266/2). Scale 11.3 : 1 (nearly 12 : 1). In glass case.

First locomotive built by the Neath Abbey Ironworks in 1830/31, (for the Speedwell Mining Company in the Upper Sirhowy Valley, Mon.), and was bought by Thomas Prothero on behalf of that mining syndicate. An 0-4-0 locomotive with 10 ½" x 24" cylinders for use on a 4' 2" plateway. It had vertical cylinders with bell crank drive.
