Pierhead, Cardiff, photograph

unknown (Photographer)

Pierhead building, Cardiff, showing the S.S. PORTIA (Liverpool & South Wales S.S. Co. Ltd.) leaving West Bute Basin. Severn trow CAROLINE and Falmouth tug (SYLPH? / St.BOTOLPH?) moored between the dock entrances.

The CAROLINE was built at Framilode in around 1830. By 1868, she had been converted from clinker built and smack rigged, to carvel built and ketch rigged for more sea-going trade. In about 1910 she was owned by Wallbridge of Cardiff and in the coal trade mostly carrying between Bridgwater and Bristol.
