Bronze Age Gold from Wales

William Vaughan (c.1707-1775)

FELLOWES, James (1710-1751)

The similarity of this painting to signed portraits of the sitter's wife and daughter indicate that it was also painted by Fellowes in 1751. The sitter is identified by an inscription on the back as William Vaughan (~1707-1775) of Corsygedol, Merioneth. From an old family, which claimed descent from a ward of Llywelyn the Great, he was educated at Cambridge, became MP for Merioneth, and was the first 'Chief President' of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion. This work hung formerly at Nannau, near Dolgellau.
