Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Coast scene with red hill

Jawlensky was born in Torzhok, north-west of Moscow. He studied at St Petersburg and Munich, and visited France, where he was deeply impressed by the work of Cézanne. After settling in Munich, he exhibited with Kandinsky and Marc, who founded the Blue Rider Group in 1911. This work was painted at Prerow on the Baltic coast, where Jawlensky considered that he painted his 'best landscapes...in very strong, glowing colours'.
