Teapot, cover and stand

Spode, Josiah II (Factory)

Teapot, bone china, standing on a straight-sided oblong foot-rim, oblong body with bulbous sides sloping inwards at the shoulder before flaring out to a collar at the neck, slightly raised lip-rim sloping inwards with a flanged inner rim, plain curving spout, high scrolled loop handle with raised thumb-spur and an innner spur lower down, oblong domed cover with oblong finial to the top, a pierced steam hole to one side of the cover; delicately painted in gilt and polychrome enamels with to the sides of the body small sprigs of flowers, border around the lower body of cross-hatching in red, border to the shoulder in gilt, red and green of chrysanthemum-like flower heads and scrolling foliage, to the collar a border transfer-printed in blue of groups of flowers and spreading foliage, border of small gilt scrolls to the lip-rim, the spout decorated with stylized leaves in gilt, the handle decorated with a stylized gilt leaf and further gilt markings, to the sides of the cover a border transfer-printed in blue of groups of flowers and spreading foliage, border of small gilt scrolls to the rim, border around the top of the cover in red, green and gilt of chrysanthemum-like flower heads and scrolling foliage, the finial painted in gilt. Stand, bone china, oblong shape with straight-sides foot-rim, curving sides and spreading rim, shallow notches to the corners of the rim; delicately painted in gilt and polychrome enamels with to the centre of the well a number of small sprigs of flowers enclosed within a red cross-hatched border, border in red, green and gilt around the edge of the well of chrysanthemum-like flower heads and scrolling foliage, border to the sides transfer-printed in blue of groups of flowers and spreading foliage, border of small gilt scrolls to the rim.
