St Francis (1181-1226), founder of the Franciscan Order, is shown wearing their habit. Strozzi, a Genoese artist, expresses the powerful emotions of the saint as he contemplates his Saviour on the Cross. A skull, symbolic of mortality, and a bible are nearby.
