Dish

Beswick, John (John Beswick is credited with modernising the Beswick factory after the death of his father and company founder, James Wright Beswick, in 1921.)

Dish or tray, white earthenware body with cream coloured glaze, of rectangular form with lobed edges and a 'figure of eight' shaped foot ring; at the centre of the dish is an underglaze, transfer-printed stylised circus scene, comprising three black 'stick figure' acrobats in pink dress, each standing on the back of a cantering circus pony, printed in a pale blue with black highlights, to the left side of the dish is an abstract climbing frame composed of red lines, on which four male acrobats are balancing and to the top right of the dish is a pair of trapeze artists, one male and one female, the trapeze extending from the dark red, hand-painted rim border.
