Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Dorothea Quarry engine signals, sign

A signal advice sign for a lifting engine (written in Welsh).

The sign advices about how many rings of a bell should be made to indicate different movements of the lifting engine. Five signals are described:- a) To start the machine, one ring of the bell; b) To stop the machine, one ring of the bell; c) To lower, two rings of the beel; d) To travel in, three rings of the bell; e) To travel out, four rings of the bell.

As the advice is given for moving out, moving in, and lifting it is presumed that the advice is for a ‘blondin’.
