Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Landscape near Sant'Agata

"Make all the studies you can from nature" was the advice given to Thomas Barker by his sponsor Charles Spackman when he set off to Italy. The young artist took note, and spent so many hours sketching scenes like these outdoors that he once almost died of sunstroke! Barker was born in Pontypool, but later moved to Bath. The sombre colours and bold brushstrokes used here are typical of his style.
