Bronze Age Gold from Wales

John Owen MP (c.1702-1754)

HIGHMORE, Joseph (Artist)

The son of a lawyer, John Owen (c.1702-54) of Presaddfed, Anglesey, became MP for Anglesey in 1741. The cost of his campaign ruined him. After initially opposing the Bulkeleys, a major local landed family, he supported them from 1747 and received the seat for Beaumaris. Highmore, one of the leading portraitists in the reign of George II, specialised in lively, naturalistic portraits, which appealed to the growing affluent middle class.
