Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Coast of Asia Minor seen from Rhodes

Leighton painted this oil sketch during one of his tours of the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean. The crisp simplicity of these small panoramas is a complete contrast to the visionary scenes of Greek and Roman life for which he is best known. These were hugely successful and he would later dominate the Victorian art world as President of the Royal Academy.
