Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Le Hetre

This simple scene of a figure beneath a large Beech tree, illuminated by a silvery evening light, is characteristic of Corot's atmospheric landscapes. His departure from composed historic scenes and his loose technique, were at first rejected by academics who considered his works mere studies. The artist's emphasis on the observation of nature and light, however, changed the course of French landscape painting.
