Creation/Production

He is probably the Joseph Rayner Stephens Helsby who was born in West Derby, Liverpool in about 1861. On the 1881 census he was an "art student (watercolour)" at St. Asaph, and in 1891 was living in 6 Wellington Terrace, Canton, Cardiff and was a "portrait & landscaper painter", by 1911 he was still in Cardiff at 25 Lower Cathedral Road with occupation "landscape artist". He died in 1925 at Cardiff aged 64. It seems likely he was named after the famous Methodist Minister Joseph Rayner Stephens.
