Chinese school (Artist)

Portrait of barque XIPHIAS. Unsigned and undated. Framed.

Relatively little is known about this three-masted barque. She was built in New Brunswick, Canada in 1856, one of a large number of Canadian-built vessels purchased by British owners in the mid 19th century. The Xiphas was built for Davies and Co. of Cardiff, chiefly for the coal trade to South America. Ychydig sy'n hysbys am y barc tri hwylbren hon. Fe'i hadeiladwyd ym 1856 yn New Brunswick yng Nghanada, yn un o nifer helaeth o longau a adeiladwyd yno i berchnogion o Brydain ar y pryd. 'Roedd hi'n eiddo i gwmni 'Davies & Co.', Caerdydd, ac yn hwylio'n gyson â glo i dde America.
