Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Garn Pit, Blaenavon, photograph

unknown (Photographer)

Garn Pit Blaenavon, 21 June 1899. One of the earliest of the Blaenavon pits sunk in the 1830's. Its surface bulk and wooden tandem headframs were typical of the larger pits of this period with a fairly tall engine house containing a vertical steam winding engine. The small and wider chimney probably served as a flue for the underground furnace used for ventilating the mine.
