Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Remains of the Palace of Philippe le Bel

HOLLAND, James (1800-1870)

Holland specialised in architectural subjects and made numerous sketching trips to the Continent. This painting is probably identical with a picture exhibited at the British Institution in 1835. Philip IV 'the Fair' (1268-1314) was the French King who dissolved the Templers, seized Pope Boniface VIII, and initiated the Avignon Papacy. The ornate staircase tower in this picture considerably post-dates Philip IV, being late fifteenth-century in style.
