Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Mug

Large cider mug, glazed earthenware, with slightly flattened rim, cylindrical body with slightly flaring foot rim and inset base, simple scroll handle; transfer printed in underglaze black on one side with a banner beginning "TRUST IN GOD..." amid a group of images of farming tools, a sheath of corn, two farmers at work, a dairywoman and several farming animals, on the opposite side of the body is a cartouche bordered by wildflowers, crops and fruit with a romanticised portrait of a woman and three children, opposite the handle is a long verse beginning "Let the wealthy and great..." in a cartouche bordered by upper and lower banners with inscriptions, as well as images including crops, plants, farming tools, a beehive and a chicken, the rim and handle are printed with a running border of hops.
