Llandybie lime works, slide

Ruston & Hornsby 4wDM diesel locomotive (builder’s no. 299107 of 1950) on railway siding to Cilyrychen lime kilns near Llandebie, looking ENE. South end of Gothick block of kilns built in 1850s by R.K. Penson visible in background. This locomotive was acquired 1966 when the connection from the main railway line was transferred from British Railways to Lime Firms Ltd who operated the quarry, and BR locomotives ceased to work the line, obliging the quarry company to acquire its own locomotive. The railway connection was closed by June 1971 and the locomotive was disposed of 1972. The photo was taken in summer 1971, probably after the cessation of traffic to judge from the absence of railway wagons and the grass starting to grow over the rails – it appears that the disused locomotive was stored in the open-air.
