Bronze Age Gold from Wales
Captain William Owen (1737-1778)
The son of a Montgomeryshire gentry family, Owen served in the Navy in India during the Seven Years War (1756-63), and lost his arm in a battle against the French in 1760. This portrait was therefore painted after 1760 and Owen is wearing his Lieutenant's uniform.
