Bronze Age Gold from Wales

Medieval lead seal matrix

Lead seal matrix, probably of 12th or 13th century date. Circular, incomplete with an area missing from legend. The rear of the matrix is flat and has a rounded lug, without a perforation, bent against the rear. The die has a five-pointed star at the centre, within a concave-sided cross. The encisrcliing legend is incomplete and reads: +S'IE[- -] IAPLEWELIN. Possibly 'Seal of Iewan Ap Llewellyn' suggesting it to be the personal seal of Iewan, son of Llewellyn.
