Bronze Age Gold from Wales

The Honourable George Canning (1770-1827)

George Canning (1770-1827) was Foreign Secretary in 1807-08 and 1822-27 and Prime Minister in 1827. His liberal Toryism made him an extremely popular MP for Liverpool, where an admiring merchant Colonel Bolton, commissioned this bust for £126. It was shown at the Royal Academy in 1819. Chantrey was the leading portrait sculptor of his day, his sitters including George IV, Walter Scott and Lord Castlereagh.
