Bronze Age Gold from Wales
Bank of the Seine
DAUMIER, Honoré (1808-1879)
The tension between the man restraining his horse and the dog barking from the shadows shows Daumier's skill in depicting movement. The contrasting effects of light and dark also add to the sense of drama. While the subject of men taking their horses down to the River Seine to drink was an everyday occurrence, here the artist has filled it with energy and intrigue.
Work was part of the AFA tour (2009-2010): From Turner to Cézanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales
