Bronze Age Gold from Wales

A lion with shield in right paw

NICHOLLS, Thomas (Artist)

These plaster models (maquettes) were made by Thomas Nicholls from William Burges’ original drawings for Cardiff Castle’s ‘Animal Wall’. The Marquis of Bute commissioned Burges to restore Cardiff Castle in 1869, and the ‘Animal Wall’ is perfectly in keeping with his spectacular and playful Gothic-style interior.
