Bronze Age Gold from Wales

The night walkers

DAUMIER, Honoré (1808-1879)

The dark outlines and lack emphasis on light and dark reveal Daumier's experience in drawing and printmaking. His reputation was first established as a satirical caricaturist and it was only later he ventured into painting with oils. This work is an early example. The figures' dress marks a distinction in social class - perhaps a reference to the political issues of the time.

Work was part of the AFA tour (2009-2010): From Turner to Cézanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales
