WELCH, Lucy Elizabeth Kemp

Lucy Kemp Welch was born in Bournemouth and made a reputation as a horse painter. Lucy studied under Herkomer at Bushey. She was eager to pursue a role as a war artist during the First World War but encountered much rejection due to the fact that she was female. An early poster she produced for the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee did however become very popular. Her best known painting was Forward the Guns which she painted in situ on Salisbury Plain using a large box to protect the canvas. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1917. The success of that picture encouraged her to embark on Big Guns to the Front. This received great acclaim when she exhibited it at the 1918 Royal Academy. In 1921, Big Guns to the Front, was sold to the National Museum of Wales for £840 from the War Pictures Fund. Ganwyd Lucy Kemp Welch yn Bournemouth a gwnaeth enw iddi ei hun fel peintiwr ceffylau. Astudiodd Lucy dan Herkomer yn Bushey. Roedd yn awyddus i sefydlu ei hun fel arlunydd rhyfel yn ystod y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf ond bu raid iddi wynebu llawer o wrthwynebiad oherwydd ei rhyw. Fe ddaeth poster cynnar o'i gwaith a gynhyrchodd i Bwyllgor Recriwtio'r Senedd yn boblogaidd iawn fodd bynnag. Ei pheintiad mwyaf enwog oedd 'I'r Blaen â'r Gynnau'. Peintiodd hwn ar y safle ar Wastadedd Caersallog gan ddefnyddio bocs mawr i warchod y cynfas. Fe'i rhoddwyd ar ddangos yn yr Academi Frenhinol ym 1917. Bu llwyddiant y llun hwnnw yn fodd i'w hannog i gychwyn ar 'Drylliau Mawr i'r Ffrynt'. Derbyniodd 'Drylliau Mawr i'r Ffrynt' glod mawr pan arddangoswyd ef yn Academi Frenhinol 1918. Ym 1921, gwerthwyd 'Gynnau Mawr i'r Ffrynt' i Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Cymru am £840 o'r Gronfa Darluniau Rhyfel.
