Coin

Amulet in a box, with a typed note: 'Chinese Coin carried for Good Luck by a soldier of a Regiment that had been in China. 1916'. Acquired by the Museum in 1918 from Edward Lovett, a folklorist and collector from Croydon.

NB further research suggests that this is, in fact, a Japanese coin dating to the Meiji period. This particular mintage dates to 1882. Copper alloy coin with added-on ring. Front has a coiling dragon in the centre, surrounded by Kanji characters and ‘2 SEN’ in Latin script. The verso has a wreath design of Paulownia plant (official seal of Japanese Government) and a Chrysanthemum seal (Imperial seal of Japan) located above surrounded by the words ’50 for one yen’ in Kanji (a 2 Sen coin is worth 1/50 of a Japanese Yen). (KT April 2025)
