Thomas Johnes of Hafod (1748-1816)

CHANTREY, Sir Francis (1782-1841)

In the 1780s Thomas Johnes (1748-1816) laid out pleasure grounds at Hafod in Cardiganshire, following the 'Picturesque Landscape' theories of his cousin Richard Payne Knight of Downton Castle, Herefordshire. Visitors flocked to see the Elysium created in a location previously regarded as remote and inhospitable. Johnes was also a patron of the arts and a progressive agriculturist. This bust was ordered in 1811 at a cost of £105.
