Rectangular mattress covered with tabby-woven Hessian fabric with blue/brown stripes, filled with straw.
The two shorter opposing sides are made from strips of cotton ticking (herringbone twill with brown stripes), while the longer opposing sides were probably once made up using the same Hessian fabric as the top and bottom (c.f. 60.474.3), however, one side has now been replaced with a new, plain hessian tabby woven fabric .
The upper and lower edges of the shorter sides are finished with piping using a c.2cm wide cotton tape (with brown stripes).
Rectangular patches of new Hessian fabric have been used to repair this mattress: there is one on one face and another one on one of the shorter sides. All new Hessian fabric, including the strip used to make up the longer side, is tabby woven, Z-spun, singles yarn of a pale brown colour.
