S.S. EXCELSIOR (1396 Grt.). Built in 1883 by J. Readhead & Co., South Shields (yard no. 197) as WYLO for S.S. Wylo Co. Ltd. (Gracie, Beazley & Co. mgrs.), Liverpool. In 1896 she was sold to G.L. Vatis & Co., of Syra (Greece) and renamed BILLIO. In 1899, she was sold to Red. A/B Excelsior (J.M. Pettersson mgr.), of Helsingborg (Sweden) and renamed EXCELSIOR. The ship would retain this name until 1939. In 1915 Red. A/B Polaris became owner and in 1916 H. Uner A/B (Rob. Go9hle mgr.), of Norrkoping (Sweden). In 1921 ownership switched to Robt. Gohle & E. Beckmann, also of Norrkoping. The same year, the vessel was sold to Red. A/B Cecil (G.F. Persson mgr.), of Landskrona (Sweden) In 1935, A/B G.H. Dalgren (G.H. Dalgren mgr.), of Helsingborg. In 1939, the ship was renamed ANU and homeport switched to Tallinn. Her owners were A. Saarna & G.H. Dalgren. On 6 February 1940, she hit a mine and was sunk off the mouth of the River Tay. The mine was laid on 23 December 1939 by the German submarine U 13.
