Mug, marbled light and dark earthenware, standing on a slightly inset base within a flattened-off foot-rim, cylindrical sides very slightly flaring to the mouth, plain loop handle with a round disk to the lower terminal, a number of pronounced concentric throwing rings to the lower body giving a banded effect; the exterior sides coated with a white slip, this then incised around the middle of the body revealing the dark earthenware body beneath and creating a decoration of stylised foliage and the inscription "Thomas Lowton / The best is not to / good for you 1780", the upper and lower exterior body decorated with bands of beaded white slip, covered all over with a clear glossy glaze.
