Seal impression: Royal

Obverse. Within a gothic-type niche, the king enthroned beneath a canopy bearing a miniature Virgin and Child. The king holds in his right hand a sceptre topped by a reliquary, in his left hand an orb topped by a long cross crosslet. To either side, in small pinnacled niches, dext. the Virgin and Child, sin. St George. (Birch suggests lions to either side of the throne, but these may be simply its cushion and other furnishings). Birch also sees an angel in exergue supporting the corbel of the pedestal, but this is not clear on this impression). In lateral niches, an oak tree on which rests a bird and from which is suspended a shield of arms: quarterly, FRANCE (Ancient) and ENGLAND. Beyond, in niches on the margins of the field, a man-at-arms standing in a battlement, above each is church or hall-like miniature building, topped by dext. a small globe or roundel, sin. a mullet. The legend (preceded and followed by a stop and foliage) is now in open Black Letter script.
