Roman stone millstone

A single fragment comprising approximately 18 per cent of a lower stone which has a thickness varying between 13 and 26 mm. at the circumference, and an estimated diameter of 0.765m. The elevated, gently convex grinding face preserves the lay-out of the furrowing, of which a single harp remains. Although some wear has occurred about the eye, and thin concentric striae are evenly distributed right across the face, the maximum wear has occurred about the skirt where a raised lip has gradually developed. The thickness of the stone expands to 56 mm. at the centre of the face, where a portion of the upper part of a circular eye, with an estimated diameter of c. 85 mm. survives intact. The slightly irregular, approximately vertical sides of the stone are fairly smoothly finished, but the almost horizontal base is only roughly dressed to shape. Although it remains in fairly sound condition, the stone has been harshly treated in the course of its working.
