S.S. PENDEEN, glass negative

Hansen, Leslie W.

¾ Starboard bow view of S.S. PENDEEN and tug, Cardiff Docks, c.1947.

The Chellew Steam Navigation Co. Ltd. had its origins in Truro in 1888 when R. B. Chellew bought his first steamship. The firm was taken over by Frank Shearman of Cardiff in 1920, and he maintained the practice of naming the firm's vessels after Cornish place-names starting with the prefix 'Pen-'. The 4,174 gross ton Pendeen was built for Chellew's at West Hartlepool in 1923 and is seen here in the Queen Alexandra Dock, c. 1948.
