S.S. SAMDAK. Launched 1943 as JOHN RUSSEL POPE, by Bethlehem – Fairfield Shipyards Inc., Baltimore, Maryland, with engine by General Machinery Corp, Hamilton, Ohio. She was completed as SAMDAK for MoWT (managed by Moss Line, Liverpool. 1947 – Sold to Alpha South African Steamship Co., and renamed ALPHA VAAL (managed under a British flag by Moller Line, Durban). 1948 – Sold to Alexander Shipping Co., London and renamed LEDBURY (managed by Houlder Bros., London). 1961 – Sold to the Polish Government, and renamed KOPALNIA CZELADZ (managed by Polish Steamship Co., Szczecin). 1972 – Ownership transferred to Polish Steamship Co., Szczecin. She was broken up at Faslane in 1973.
