Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
A simple pine sea chest owned by Captain John Thomas of Penarth. The lid opens to reveal an oil-painted canvas depicting a ship on stormy seas with a lighthouse and a house on the shore.
Pine sea-chest consisting of 4 dove-joined panels and hinged lid with lock (escutcheon missing); lid made of two nailed panels with beading around (left side beading missing); base has 4 inch moulding nailed to each side; two rope carrying-handles attached with decorative brackets and iron washers, handles have been wrapped in cotton and woven leather (painted blue and red); brackets have a carved and painted flag in centre; whole outer surface stained dark brown/red; interior contains till box (stained); base consists of 4 boards (now detached); lid has 2 iron-forged hinges; inside of lid painted white with oil-painted canvas pinned to centre depicting ship on stormy seas with lighthouse and house on shore.
