Cradle

A wooden cradle on rockers, painted red

The colour red was seen as a protective colour that would guard against evil forces – a constant worry for many parents of this period. It was made in 1853 by Owen Lazarus, Capel Coch, Llanbedrgoch, Anglesey. Census records show that Owen Lazarus was a shoemaker and son of an agricultural labourer in 1841, when 15 years old. By 1851, at 29 years old, he was a master shoemaker, a widower and had a three year old son, Robert. However, by 1861 he had remarried and had 4 other children, including a 7 year old son also called Owen, whom he had made this cradle for, and a 2 month old daughter who was probably using the cradle at that time.
